More information about Charleston:
In 1670, settlers arrived in Charles Towne to begin a new life with the promise of religious freedom and free farm land. They soon discovered that the pluff mud of the area created the perfect place to grow rice. That discovery soon led to the abundant wealth and a prosperous lifestyle enjoyed for decades. Renamed Charleston in 1783 and nicknamed “The Holy City” for the numerous churches on the peninsula, the City remained the center of activity in the state for some time. In 1860, the Ordinance of Secession was signed in Charleston and six months later the Confederacy fired the first shots on Fort Sumter located in Charleston Harbor. Today, the City still holds all the character and charm of yesteryear, but offers the many conveniences of a modern city.
Located on the Atlantic Ocean at the junction of the Ashley and Cooper Rivers, historic Charleston is almost 8 square miles of bustling activity. Where history once came alive, there is no lack for activities. The performing arts are well represented by the Charleston Symphony Orchestra, Charleston Ballet Theater, or The Charleston Stage Company. Each Spring the Spoleto Festival USA brings dance, theater, music and fine art to thousands. Broad and King Streets are lined with government and professional offices, banks, antique dealers and art galleries, bookstores, national chain department stores as well as specialty boutiques, restaurants and cafes. Tour downtown via a guided walking tour, horse drawn carriage or rickshaw and enjoy the sites of Antebellum and Civil War era homes and churches.
